Facegen:

I used one hermaphrodite Facegen head with two variants which morphed to a base Male and a base Female. This allowed gender variation without having to repeat the hand generation of mutliple face morphs for visemes and facial expression.
Hair and beard meshes were processed in Facegen to associate them with the Facegen head morphs. Each had a short and long version so hair length could be adjusted in the editor. Vertex colour information controlled the draw order of alpha'd surfaces. Beards were divided into 5 component sections which could be assembled into sets for different facial hair types but ultimately these became individual meshes.
